Twirling Umbrellas Ltd. builds websites for associations, regulators, non-profits, and other mission-driven organizations, and accessibility is part of that work. We hold our own website to the same standard we recommend to our clients.
This Accessibility Policy explains the standard we aim for, how the website supports people using different abilities, devices, and assistive technologies, where we know it falls short, and how to tell us about a barrier.
1. Our Commitment
We want everyone to be able to find information, understand it, and contact us, regardless of disability, device, or how they access the web. We treat accessibility as ongoing work rather than a one-time project, and we review this website as we add content and features.
2. The Standard We Aim For
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. WCAG is the international standard for web accessibility and the basis of most Canadian accessibility requirements.
We follow this standard voluntarily. We have not had this website formally audited, so we describe it as working toward WCAG 2.2 Level AA rather than claiming full conformance.
3. How This Website Supports Accessibility
This website is designed and built to:
- work with a keyboard alone, with a visible focus indicator and a “Skip to content” link at the top of every page;
- keep keyboard focus inside the menu and search panels while they are open, close them with the Escape key, and return focus to the button that opened them;
- use one main heading per page, a logical heading order, and consistent page regions, so screen reader users can move around quickly;
- describe meaningful images with alternative text, and hide purely decorative images from screen readers;
- label every form field, mark required fields in words, and list any errors in a summary that links to each field;
- tell screen reader users when a link opens in a new tab;
- respect the “reduce motion” setting on your device, which turns off animations and autoplaying video; and
- adapt to small screens, such as phones, without scrolling sideways.
4. Pausing Motion
Some pages include moving content, such as a scrolling row of client logos, rotating words, and short looping videos. You can stop all of it with the Pause motion button at the bottom of every page. Your choice is remembered on your device until you select Play motion.
On phones, and when your device is set to save data, videos show a still image with play controls instead of playing automatically.
5. Known Limitations
Despite our efforts, some parts of this website may not be fully accessible:
- Third-party content. Embedded content and tools provided by other companies, such as social media, video players, and cookie or analytics services, are not fully under our control.
- Website screenshots. Case studies show images of websites we have built. These images show design work and are not a replacement for visiting the live website, which you can reach from each case study.
- Older content. Content published before our current standards may not meet them yet. We update it as we review it.
If any of these prevent you from getting information you need, please contact us and we will provide it another way.
6. Alternative Formats
If you need information from this website in a different format, such as plain text, large print, or a conversation by phone or video call, let us know and we will work with you to provide it.
